An Urban Adventure in Long Island City

Staying put this past Memorial Weekend, my boyfriend, B, and I had the opportunity to experience a walking tour of Long Island City with BQE Tours: The Brooklyn Queens Experience. Big fans of exploring lesser-known areas of the city and outer boroughs, we often plan our weekends around such adventures. Relying on the NYC bike map, we choose an unfamiliar neighborhood, take the subway there, and then let our feet take us where they will. This time, however, we let John Garay, co-founder of BQE Tours with his wife, Elissa, show us around the emerging Queens enclave. First up was a visit with artist Eduardo Anievas.

With epic views of the Manhattan skyline, Long Island City is certainly enticing to commuting New Yorkers and daytrippers interested in enjoying the the city from another perspective. We especially enjoyed browsing the food stands at LIC Flea & Food. There, we sampled spicy pickles from Pickle Me Pete, fried ice cream from Sam’s Fried Ice Cream, and baby bundt cakes from NYC Bundts. And next up was a tasting at Rockaway Brewing Company followed by a tasty Kansas-style BBQ at John Brown Smokehouse. The revealing tour concluded with a glass of Prosecco on the rooftop of the Z Hotel, which offered another stunning view of New York City.

For those interested in exploring Brooklyn, BQE Tours offers walking tours of both Dumbo and Williamsburg.
